Description:

A birds-nest of hand cut trails with a real old school vibe. Lots of trails that cross and intersect through the forest, on the side of, well, a big hill.

Mt Beauty trail map overwhelms a rider

There is some order to the apparent trail madness, with a series of hubs that the main trails link to, each with a map to help you choose the next part of your adventure.

There’s a good mix of XC, flow and DH trails here, ranging from gentle and easy to steep and technical. It’s a matter to getting up the hill by a variety of trails (or a shuttle) and then working your way back down the hill on a variety of trails assisted by gravity (mostly).

A great variety of surfaces here from gravel to forest mud to rock, sometimes all on the same trail. There’s some nice technical climbs too to test your balance, power and traction – something that seems to have become a bit of a rarity on modern trails. A couple of the trails are quite narrow as they traverse the slopes which concentrates the reflexes and adds to the challenge as you descend .

While the map looks a bit overwhelming, each trail is marked, so you’re never very far from a waypoint to help you navigate. Helpfully there are also some set loops of various difficulty and distance which are marked by coloured blobs. These are relatively easy to follow and mean more time riding and less time navigating.

A good number of the trails can be ridden in both directions which adds a considerable extra number of kms to the overall experience.

Great facilities at the trailhead and just a short ride to Mt Beauty for trail ales and pies, coffee and cake. It’s also on the way to Falls Creek too, so handy if you want to make a weekend of it.
